Just a year ago Winkles lost in the state championship match, and he admitted that he felt some pressure to win the title this year.
"To be honest, I felt a lot of pressure to win after coming so close last season and being ranked number one in the state this season," Winkles told the The Thomaston Times. "After it was all over with, I just felt relieved and happy that I can bring some wrestling recognition to Upson-Lee High School. I also want to thank all of my family, friends, teammates and coaches; without them I would not be here."
The Georgia AAAA heavyweight division has a max weight of 285 pounds for competitors, and Winkles was often lighter than his opponent. For the finals he weighed in at 247 pounds, and he faced Ola (GA) standout Joey Carmen who was seeking his 200th career win.
After falling behind early in the match, Winkles tied it up with a reversal and took a lead in the third period with two takedowns. With the 5-2 victory Winkles finished the year 50-2 overall and became the first wrestler in school history to win a state title.
The next destination for Winkles is NC State after signing a letter of intent to play football for the Wolfpack earlier this month. He started at tight end and middle linebacker for Upson-Lee, but Winkles will play fullback at NC State.
Winkles was recently named all-state by the Georgia Coaches Association, the Georgia Sports Writers Association, and the Atlanta Journal Constitution while also being tabbed all-middle Georgia and first-team all-region.
