Nansemond wins district tournament!

Nansemond River continues to win ball games. The Warriors won the District Tournament defeating a hard charging Western Branch team 60-56. Marquie Cooke scored 17 points to help lead Nansemond to the title.

The second quarter was the Warriors best played quarter and Marquie ignited his team scoring 10 of his 17 just before the half. The Warriors were outscored in all quarters except the second. Western Branch had an excellent tournament playing well against the top three teams in the district.

Other leading scorers for Nansemond were AJ Franklin (15 off the bench), Fred Spratley (16) and Dennis Conley (13). Warrior sharpshooter Letrone Deimel was held scoreless by Western.

The Warriors will host Granby, the number two team in the district on Monday. Granby was knocked off by Norview in an Eastern District Semi-Final game on Friday. They received an at-large bid due to their regular season and district standings. They finished second behind Maury who was also upset in the semi-finals of the Eastern Tournament by Lake Taylor.

It was reported that Drexel Coach James "Bruiser" Flint and NC State Assistant Coach Mark Phelps were both in the house for the Nansemond's victory.
