Mike O'Donnell may not have made any three pointers, but he was deadly effective just inside the arc as he lead Largo (24-6) to the Class 5A District 9 championship over Palm Harbor 65-53.
Palm Harbor had no answer to Mike O'Donnell
and Largo as they went on a 14-4 surge in the third quarter to break open what had been a tight game. O'Donnell scored 10 of his 17 points in the decisive run. In a three-minute span at the end of the third quarter, Mike hit a pair of pull-up jumpers from the top of the key and a leaner under a defender from almost the same spot to break open the tight game.
Despite fighting the flu, Mike added 8 assists, 5 steals and 5 rebounds to go with his 17 points.
O'Donnell's role has been to set the ship right all year for Largo when things look to be going wrong. Mike described his role to St. Petersburg Times' John Cotey. "We weren't hitting anything. When we start to get frustrated, usually it's my job to take over. I think anytime you can hit a few, it calms you down a little."
For O'Donnell, this was his second district title. Largo also won it when he was a freshman starter in 2000.
