Russell Visits NC State

Hoke County's Christian Russell is one of the state's top linebackers, and he's squarely on NC State's recruiting radar. We have the latest on his recruiting and where he may be leaning.

As a junior at Westover High School, Christian Russellwas a do-it-all athlete that excelled whether on offense or defense. He finished off 2009 with close to 1,900 yards rushing and 27 touchdowns while compiling 136 tackles and four sacks on defense.

Because of some reported internal problems at Westover, Russell made the decision to transfer to Hoke County High School for his senior season- a decision that had to have the Hoke coaching staff thrilled.

Measured recently at 5-11, 220 pounds, Russell has the look of a college-ready linebacker and proved he has the speed as well after notching 40-yard dash times of 4.63 and 4.65-seconds at Saturday's Shrine Bowl combine.

That combination of size, speed, production and potential has led to a host of major scholarship offers and Russell talked with Pack Pride recently to get the latest on the rising senior's recruiting and where he's leaning.

"I've got offers from NC State, UNC, Georgia, Wake Forest, UCLA, Kentucky and Alabama," Russell told Pack Pride. "Recruiting has been going real well. I've been a little bit surprised at all the interest I've gotten."

Many of the Hoke County players, including Russell, visited NC State for a practice recently.

"NC State is good," said Russell. "I've been looking at them. They would be a good school to go to but I really haven't decided where I want to go yet. I'm really just looking at my options right now."

One of those options is UNC. Russell actually committed to the Heels for a short period of time before quickly backing off. Still, Carolina will likely be the team to beat for the rising senior's commitment before all is said and done.

Carolina is really catching my interest right now and I like them. They're a really nice school to go to with the players and facilities and everything. I committed to them for a short period of time but I decommitted because my coach told me to weigh out my options and see what everyone has to offer so that's what I plan to do.

So is Carolina in the lead now?

"The way it's looking, yeah,  I could say that but I'm not sure."

Russell added that he plans to hit several camps in addition to trips with UNC, NC State and Duke over the coming weeks. He plans to make his college decision after the conclusion of his senior season.
