After rushing for close to 1,400 yards as a junior, Charlotte (NC) Ardrey Kell RB Justus Pickett entered the 2010 recruiting year as one of the state's top athletes. After ripping off 40-yard dashes of 4.32 and 4.41-seconds this past Saturday at the Shrine Bowl combine held at Butler High School, he may find interest in his commitment elevated to a feverish pitch over the coming weeks.
Measured at 5-9, 172 pounds, Pickett has the look of an athlete that could help out in a variety of ways in college and that versatility may be why he's hearing from a number of big time programs.
"I'm hearing from Duke, Stanford, Clemson, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Ohio State and those are some of the main ones I've been hearing from," said Pickett.
"East Carolina, Duke, Stanford and South Carolina have offered me."
Stanford was one of the first programs to jump on Pickett's bandwagon and it's clear the Cardinal will be a team to reckon with over the coming months.
"Right now I would definitely say Stanford is the one showing me the most attention because they actually offered me as a sophomore. When their coach came to the school, they offered me. My parents really love it there. Their main thing is academics and then football is next. So they've been on me pretty hard but also, Clemson and South Carolina, they've been recruiting me hard too."
Two of the major in-state schools, NC State and UNC, have yet to offer but Pickett told Pack Pride he thinks it's just a matter of time before they jump on board. He also shared his thoughts on the two rivals.
"I'm definitely hearing a lot from both State and Carolina. I actually plan on getting offers from both of them during the spring when the coaches come down. At least that what the coaches said previously. I've visited both of them actually and I definitely like them, too.
"With State, when I went down there, I definitely like the coaches and it seems like they do a good job with the players. Overall, with their running backs, I like the way they use them and it seems like something I would fit in with.
"At Carolina, some of my old coaches that used to work with me went there so I've definitely been watching them for a while. When I went down there, I think they want me more as a defensive back, which I don't mind but I definitely liked it down there."
While some might expect the Pack and Heels to hold a spot on Pickett's top five, that isn't the case- at least early on.
"I would say my top schools right now are South Carolina, Stanford, Georgia, Ohio State and Clemson."
