Pack in Top Five For Owens
Tight end Drew Owens has already emerged as one of the state's top prospects and is sure to receive plenty of additional of attention between now and National Signing Day.
The 6-6, 227-pound junior from Charlotte (NC) Ardrey Kell estimates that he has been "13 and 15" scholarship offers already, with plenty of other schools evaluating him very closely.
Owens was in attendance at the Wolfpack's Kay Yow spring football game, and he spoke with Pack Pride shortly after that event, recapping how the experience was.
"I thought it was a real good game," he said. "The fans came out. There were a lot of fans. The tight ends caught a lot of balls."
It was Owens' third trip to the NC State campus. He attended a junior day last year as well as one this year, in addition to the spring game.
"I like the program a lot. I like how they use their tight ends and I really like their tight ends coach, and also the head coach," he continued. "They send me a lot of handwritten letters and every once in a while I'll call him."
NC State isn't the only place Owens has been to recently. He attended one of South Carolina's spring practices and he went to a scrimmage at North Carolina as well. He doesn't have any plans going forward but is open to attending some events later in the spring and over the summer.
"I want to take a couple of official visits and narrow it down before I make my decision," he said. "If I had to make a top five it would probably be South Carolina, Clemson, NC State, North Carolina and Wisconsin."
Owens said the Badgers are on his list because of how they use their tight ends and their consistency in reaching the postseason.
He finished his junior season with 14 receptions for 225 yards and four touchdowns and is currently rated a three-star prospect and the No. 21 tight end in the nation by Scout.com.
