O'Donnell leads Largo to victory

State point guard signee Mike O'Donnell scored 22 points en route to a close victory in the Florida 5A playoffs.

Mike O'Donnell and the Largo Packers advanced out of the first round of the Class 5A Florida state basketball playoffs last Thursday with a last second win over St. Petersburg High. O'Donnell hit two free throws in the final seconds to seal the 64-59 victory over the Green Devils, and totaled a game-high 22 points.

O'Donnell put the Packers in a position to win by driving the lane and splitting the defense for a layup, pushing the lead to 59-55. The Green Devils closed to within a point, but teammate and 6'7" junior Trevor Bing, brother of current East Carolina starting forward Erroyl Bing, rebounded a missed free throw, then hit two of his own before O'Donnell was able to put the game officially out of reach.

O'Donnell will face a tough test Tuesday when he leads his team in the Regional semifinals against the 20-1 Mariner High School squad from Cape Coral. Ranked 1st in the state by the Florida Sports Writers Association, Mariner is led by Xavier and Cincinatti recruit, Robert Ferguson. A 6'7" junior, Ferguson scored a line of 33 points, 18 rebounds and 12 blocks in the Tritons 80-56 victory over Gulf Coast in Mariner's playoff opener.
