Loughery Coming to Wolfpack Camp

Philadelphia (PA) William Penn Charter School quarterback John Loughery hopes to follow in the footsteps of his cousin, Boston College legend and NFL star, Matt Ryan. Pack Pride has the latest on his plans to camp at NC State.

Philadelphia (PA) William Penn Charter School quarterback John Loughery hasn't picked up his first offer yet but he's not letting that get him down.

Why should he be bothered by that? After all, his cousin -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan -- didn't receive his first offer until the summer before his senior season. That offer was from Boston College and Ryan went ahead and committed. The rest is history, as Ryan put together one of the most storied careers in BC history.

That brings us to Loughery, who has great familiarity with the NC State coaching staff because of Ryan's time with coach Tom O'Brien and his staff. That's one of the reasons the 6-5, 205-pound quarterback is so interested in the Wolfpack. He believes the staff can help him reach his potential.

"I have a lot of plans this summer," Loughery said early this week. "Actually, coming up this weekend I'm going to UNC on Friday, Duke on Saturday and NC State on Sunday. I've gotten interest from all three (schools). I've been to NC State and UNC before so I'll go down for a half day and talk to the coaches.

"I went down to NC State after my freshman season to camp and that went well. I didn't go last summer but I will be going this summer because that's a school I'm very interested in. I could see myself going there if things work out."

Loughery went on to point out the importance of knowing a coaching staff, and how comfortable he is with the one currently in Raleigh.

"Coach Swepson is the one who recruits my area and he coached my cousin Matt at Boston College," he explained. "I know them (the coaches) well. It's a great staff and a great group of guys. They're one big reason I have so much interest in the school. I know all the coaches. I went up to a lot of Matt's games (at Boston College) and I knew them from that. I like their style and I like their offense. I think it would suit me well."

After his tour of North Carolina schools Loughery plans on visiting a couple of Big Ten schools and then taking trips to Rutgers and Boston College.

"Basically until the first week of July I'm busy," he said. "My cousin Matt decided at the end of the summer when he got his first offer. I know a lot of people wait. I haven't really thought about it yet. If the right school comes along then I could see myself (committing).

"I've just got to go to these camps and perform well. Things will work out. I have a lot of interest from a lot of places but you can't go to 20 camps. I had to pick 10 or 11 from the schools I'm really considering and hope it goes well."

As a junior, Loughery completed 177 of 312 passes for 2066 yards and 18 touchdowns on his way to breaking both city and school records.
