Young Has Options

Not even the biggest recruiting junkie probably knew who B.J. Young was before the start of the AAU basketball season, but now he is considered one of the top point guards in the 2011 class.

Young's high school career... well he hasn't had much of one. He missed his freshman season due to academics and only played half a year as a sophomore. Young sit out last year after transferring to Florissant (Mo.) McCluer North and also hadn't had much AAU exposure.

That all changed in early May when Young, who plays point guard for St. Louis Gameface, put 42 on the board against star guard Tony Wroten and Seattle Rotary in the Hensley Memorial Run N' Slam Tournament.

Young followed that showing up with a terrific outing at the NBPA Camp and posted huge scoring numbers in July. In April he wasn't even listed in Scout.com's database. Now he is the No. 21 recruit in the 2011 class and the nation's No. 4 point guard prospect.

"I finished up AAU strong," said Young. "I had a couple of 50-point games and tried to help my team win some games.

"I know I seemed to come out of nowhere, but I always felt like I was one of the guards in my class. I'm really enjoying this right now, and I'm just trying to take advantage of everything offered to me."

Young's recruitment has taken off as well. He claims offers from Indiana, Arkansas, Marquette, Baylor, Iowa, Iowa State, Illinois State, Illinois, Providence, and NC State and is receiving offers from several other programs.

"Right now I know I'm supposed to visit Arkansas on September 4th," said Young. "After that I don't have any other visits set, but I'm supposed to be going to Indiana, Marquette, and Illinois State for sure too."

Illinois State has a connection that has them in the mix.

"With them one of my coaches played under their coaching staff," Young stated. "It's a good coaching staff that I like. My coach said they have a nice style of play."

Young indicated that NC State just recently started to pursue him. The Wolfpack evaluated him in July and have stayed in contact.

"I'm still learning about North Carolina State," said Young. "I know they have a good class coming in... they have some great guards signed, and I know they want me to play the one.

"I will definitely visit North Carolina State when I get a visit set up, but I don't have one set up right now. I like North Carolina State for sure."

Young has four programs at the top of his list as he is looking to make a fall decision.

"Indiana, Arkansas, Illinois State, and Marquette would be my top four right now," said Young. "They've been on me the longest, and I like their style of play. They get up-and-down the court.

"I'll probably be deciding later on this year. It will be sometime late in September."
