Pack Still on Top for Grommer

Pack Pride has the latest on Spartanburg (SC) offensive lineman Stephen Grommer.

NC State offered a scholarship to South Carolina offensive lineman Stephen Grommer a while back and the Pack is still at the top of his list.

The 6-5, 285-pound offensive guard from Spartanburg visited NC State twice over the summer -- once for a camp and once for an unofficial visit.

By this point he has become very familiar with what the Wolfpack can offer him, educationally and athletically, so he probably doesn't need to see too much more from them.

"I did really good at the camp," Grommer told Pack Pride recently. "The visit was great. I got to see everything really. They showed me the stadium and all the new facilities, like the Murphy Center. They basically showed me what all would happen if I went there. Where I would stay, what I would get to do, and all that stuff."

Grommer said he still holds an offer from the Pack and the coaching staff has invited him to commit at any time. Could that be happening soon?

"Well, NC State is my number one school," he said. "They've been number one all along really. I've just wanted to make sure I have enough time to get to know them and let my family get to know them.

"I think I'll probably (decide) during the football season. I'm thinking that's when I'll do it."

Maryland, East Carolina and Western Carolina are the three other schools that have offered scholarships to Grommer. Though he told Pack Pride he is somewhat familiar with those schools he does not appear to have them anywhere near NC State as far as being at the top of his list.

Over the summer Grommer also went to a camp at Georgia Tech, an unofficial visit to Vanderbilt, and a junior day and unofficial visit at South Carolina.

He is not sure whether those schools might be close to offering him a scholarship.

Coach Jim Bridge has been recruiting Grommer for the Pack. He said the two have not been able to speak much lately because he and his Spartanburg teammates just finished up with two-a-days and his summer schedule has been hectic. He was, however, planning on giving the assistant coach a call some time this week after one of his practices.
