Although just a freshman, early reports have been positive on David Amerson's impact on the NC State secondary. He talked with Pack Pride recently and explained how the transition from high school to college has gone so far.
How has the transition gone from playing in high school to playing in college?
It's been fun. The game is much faster and plus I played safety (in high school) and converted to corner so it's a lot more technique and recognition. It's been pretty fun for me.
What's the biggest challenge making the move from safety to cornerback?
Like I said, it's a lot more technique. You have to make a lot quicker decisions and you just have to recognize things quicker. In high school I was just reacting to the ball and watching the ball carrier but now I have to do a lot more reading, a lot more jamming and things like that.
Have any of the other players already on the team helped you out in adjusting to college football?
Some of the upperclassmen have done a good job of giving me little pointers and trying to help me out. C.J. Wilson, Justin Byers, basically everybody has really been helping me out.
Coach Reed recruited you out of high school. What's it been like to have him as a position coach?
Coach Reed definitely stays on me but I know he wants to make me better. So I listen to everything he has to say.
How big is the difference between defending a high school offense and then going out against the NC State offense?
It's a lot faster. You have to make your decisions a lot quicker. You can make the right or wrong decision in a matter of seconds.
When you're out there defending NC State's wide receivers. Which guy do you really dread having to cover?
I would have to say J-5 (Jarvis Williams). He gets in and out of his cuts really quick and his hands are like glue so it's definitely a challenge going up against him.
