O'Brien: Tight End A Deep Position

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Tom O'Brien met with the media following Thursday's practice. O'Brien discussed a number of topics including the Wolfpack's depth at tight end and how pleased he is with his freshman class.

"Practice was fine. It was no different than what we did for morning practice of two-a-days."

"It's certainly something that will be a work in progress."

"It's always a good scrimmage, there was a lot of teachable moments in there. There's a lot of good things we have to learn from to be able to execute."

"It was four-minute situations. If you're ahead you run the ball. If you're behind you throw it. Depends on what your situation is."

"I think the whole freshman class... it's really a good class. There's a lot of good football players in that class, and that's probably the thing that stands out the most."

"[Dontae Johnson] is a big kid. He's tall back there. As one of our guys said after watching him run in the summer, that's what we're used to playing against. He's that type of big safety. I don't know how much, or if he's going to make it this year, but he's certainly going to be a heckuva player down the road."

"I don't think so, but I haven't made any judgements. We're not finished with what we're trying to get accomplished."

"Eight guys are going to be four guys. Those eight guys are trying to figure out if they are going to be 50/50, 60/40, or 70/30 players. That's what still has to be decided."

"I don't know if anyone has separated themselves. Someone has a good day, someone has a bad day. You have to be more consistent, but I think if they stay healthy you've got eight guys you feel you can put in the game and win with."

"What a great role model he was for Russell. It became apparent then, if there ever was a doubt, he certainly was going to come back and play football because that was his father's wish, to play in the NFL."

"I don't know, we just had that discussion last night. I don't have that answer... I'm not going to say that answer right now just because it's somebody's scouting report."

"You need a guy that can rush and you look in those situations, but I'm not going to help our opponents with who we think the best pass rusher is... they slide to him."

"[Tight end] is as deep a position we have right now. Knock on wood we stay healthy there, but there are four guys, [George] Bryan, [Asa] Watson, [Mario] Carter, and [Anthony] Talbert that you can play in a game now. They've had their redshirt year, you're not worried about redshirting them, and they still have more than one year of eligibility so it's a position that should continue to get better and be really a strong position for us."

"Fundamentally [David Akinniyi] does a lot of things right. He has great chase after the ball. He has a lot of want-to. He wants to go get it and never stops his motor. That's good."
