UNC-Gtown: Game Notes

CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina's up-and-down season came to an end on Wednesday night in almost fitting fashion.

On display were some of the things that haunted this team most all season, and is why it has ended in the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.

Here is a look at some of the notes of UNC's 16th loss in 35 games.

***With the loss, the all-time series with Georgetown is tied at 4-4.

***UNC defeated the Hoyas, 63-62, for the 1982 NCAA championship.

***With the defeat, UNC is now 9-4 in postseason NIT games.

***Carolina won the 1971 NIT by defeating Georgia Tech, 84-66. The Yellow Jackets weren't yet in the ACC at the time. They joined in 1979.

***UNC and Georgetown hadn't played a regular season game prior to Wednesday night since the ACC/Big East Challenge in December, 1989. The Hoyas won that night, 93-81.

***The last time the two schools met was in the Sweet 16 of the 1995 NCAA tournament. UNC won, 85-79, and defeated Kentucky two days later to advance to the Final Four.

***The Tar Heels have now lost at least 16 games in consecutive seasons. Prior to last year, UNC had never lost more than 15 games in a season.

***Rashad McCants' 26 points means he finished the season with 794 points, six behind Joseph Forte's freshman record in 1999-2000.

***However, McCants set a UNC freshman record for scoring average with 16.7 per game.

***Raymond Felton's 11 assists means he finished with 236, which is also a UNC freshman record.

***This was the first time UNC lost this season while shooting at least 50 percent from the field.

***The Tar Heels went 10:04 in the second half with just one field goal.

***UNC's 48-40 lead turned into a 62-52 deficit in a 22-4 Georgetown run over a 7:13 stretch because the Tar Heels struggled mightily against the Hoyas' zone and were poor handling the ball.

***Carolina registered 16 assists for the game but turned the ball over 18 times.

Raymond Felton had his fourth double-double in his last six games. He finished with 11 points and 11 assists. He also did so in the stretch against Duke, Maryland and Wyoming.

***Melvin Scott committed one turnover on Wednesday night, bring his total in the last 166 minutes he has played to just two.

***UNC's records in coach Matt Doherty's three seasons: 26-7, 8-20, 19-16.

***Doherty's composite record at UNC is 53-43.

***Doherty's composite ACC record at UNC is 23-25.
