Signing Day with P.J. Hairston

CHATHAM, Va. --- P.J. Hairston signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday at Hargrave Military Academy's Signing Day ceremony. With his Tar Heel commitment now in writing, he gave InsideCarolina.com some personal insight ...

First Carolina memory ...

"Of course, Michael Jordan. I saw a lot of highlights of Michael Jordan hitting that shot against Georgetown in '82. I was probably about seven or eight when I first saw (that clip).

First favorite Tar Heel ...

"Probably Michael Jordan. Even though he wasn't in college when I was growing up, knowing he went to North Carolina and that he was from North Carolina helped that out a whole lot. As far as someone who was there when I was growing up, probably Vince (Carter). He was exciting. "

Number you want to wear at Carolina ...

"Fifteen. It's a family tradition. My dad, both my aunts, my uncle wore it."

First time you heard from UNC ...

"The end of my freshman year was the first time they sent me something -- a letter or something. It was just exciting because it was UNC. Just to know they were interested in me."

First letter you got from anybody was ...

"UCLA. They never did recruit me. They just sent me letters at Dudley."

First moment you knew you were a Tar Heel ...

"When they offered me. That night when they offered me. I was going to (commit) right then but my mom stopped me and told me to wait until the next day and just think about it and make sure that was what I really wanted to do -- and that was what I really wanted to do."

Who is most proud of you today ...

"Everybody -- without them I wouldn't be here. Especially my mom, without her, none of this would be possible. That's just the main thing -- all the people who came here to support me, even when they had to work, they took the time off work to come up here to support me and watch me do this, it means a lot. It means everybody is proud of me and that's good to see."

What'd your mom say to you when she saw you today ...

"Nothing, she just smiled. She smiled and I gave her a hug."

Favorite Roy Williams memory ...

"Him showing me the pictures during my official visit when he coached back when Jordan played. He told me he had black hair when he coached Jordan."

Favorite moment of the recruiting process …

"Meeting the players. Meeting Ty Lawson and Tyler Hansbrough and Wayne Ellington and Deon Thompson, all the big-time players that are in the pros now or overseas or whatever it may be. Meeting them and knowing they're making money now, it shows what I could be doing. I could be in their footsteps doing what they're doing and meeting younger recruits who come to watch me play."

Number one goal at Carolina ...

"Just play hard and do the school work. Just get the job done. Get all the work done. Get my work done on and off the court -- especially in the classroom. On the court, just work hard and be a player."

Plan for a major ...

"Probably communications because I like to talk. I just like to talk and I'm good talking with other people, so I think communications will be good."

Favorite book ...

"The Color Purple. It's just a book about black history and it's very interesting to read."

Hidden talent ...

"I can dance and I can sing."

Favorite song to sing ...

"Whatever comes on. If I know it, whatever comes on."

Best game you've ever had ...

"When Coach Williams first came to watch me play AAU. I think I had 46 that game. It was Nationals down in Orlando. He was sitting on the sidelines and I had 46 that game. I think I hit like 11 threes. That's probably the best game I've had so far."

Most impressive single move you've done during a game...

"Probably a windmill dunk. That's my favorite dunk."

Favorite shoes to play basketball in ...

"Red, white and blue Nike Hyperdunks from this year. We played in them in the USA Global Challenge."

Best collection of guys you've played with -- AAU, pickup or high school ...

"I'd probably have to say the Pro-Am. I played on a team with Harrison (Barnes), Reggie (Bullock), John (Henson) and Justin Watts. All of us on the same team, it was real fun. Anybody could score."

Favorite basketball team to watch ...

"I'd probably have to say the Bulls -- back when Jordan was there. They had the big five, basically. Everybody on the court, they were all close. It's kind of like what we've got here at Hargrave, all seniors. All of us are best friends."
