Durant, Pollock Shine at Scrimmage

Chapel Hill, N.C.--The University of North Carolina football team completed its second scrimmage of the spring today under sunny skies at Kenan Stadium. The scrimmage was the final event of this year's 2003 Lettermen's weekend.

...and breaks away for the touchdown.
Junior quarterback Darian Durant led the first-team offense on two scoring drives and completed 11 of 15 attempts for 183 yards and two touchdowns. Durant started slow, completing just two of his first five passes and had an interception. However, on the next drive Durant flicked a short pass to Jarwarski Pollock who raced around the right end for 55 yards and a score. Following the interception, Durant completed seven consecutive passes, including the TD toss to Pollock, a 50-yard pass to tight end Bobby Blizzard and a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end John Dunn. Pollock finished with four catches for 67 yards.

"It was a productive scrimmage," said head coach John Bunting. "I've talked to our players about productivity a lot this spring. We have good players and now we need to produce. We are getting better each day, but we still have a long road ahead of us. I was especially pleased with our cornerbacks on defense and running backs on offense."

Chad Scott started at tailback with the first-team offense and had five carries for 27 yards. Jacque Lewis split time with the first-team and second-team offenses and had five carries for 83 yards. Two of those carries combined for 82 of his 83 yards, including a 27-yarder and a 55-yarder that began at the 1-yard line. Lewis also added a 41-yard reception. Willie Parker had five carries for 30 yards, but did have one fumble. Fullback Rikki Cook had two carries for 12 yards.

Quarterback C.J. Stephens had a 15-yard touchdown pass, finding Derrele Mitchell in the back of the end zone, while working with the second team. QB Matt Baker also played well, completing 4 of 6 passes for 20 yards.

Defensively, linebacker Clay Roberson made several outstanding plays, including one tackle for loss, one sack and one tackle for no gain. Four other Tar Heels registered sacks, including defensive ends Kendall High and Brian Rackley and cornerbacks Derrick Johnson and Cedrick Holt. Safety Rashad Tindall had an interception on a tipped pass and Johnson picked off Durant's errant throw.

Following the structured part of the scrimmage, the Tar Heels worked on several situational drills, including third-down offense, red zone offense and goal line defense.

Over 200 lettermen attended the festivities this weekend in Chapel Hill, which included a Golf Tournament at Finley Golf Course on Friday, a dinner at the Pope Box on Friday evening and a lunch at Kenan Stadium on Saturday. Among the lettermen in attendance included current NFL players Randy Jordan and Ethan Albright and notables Natrone Means, Mike Morton and Mike Voight. Jordan was the Oakland Raiders' special teams captain this season.
