Noel comments on the situation

3:30 P.M., CHAPEL HILL - David Noel exited the Smith Center late Tuesday afternoon. And while his head coach was reportedly in the process of agreeing to a contract buyout, Noel was on his way to join some teammates for pickup ball at Woollen Gym.

"The players have been give a three-day vacation," he said. "Most players have left and gone home on vacation. We're just waiting on a decision."

Reports spread throughout Chapel Hill and beyond Tuesday that Matt Doherty was not going to be retained after three seasons at UNC. No official announcement had been made yet, but the word was out, though the freshman walk-on said he had not been told.

Noel, however, was confident that the program would not be damaged by the situation.

"I don't think they're going to let Carolina basketball go downhill," he said of the decision-makers.

"You've got to wait and see who's going to be our coach. And if it's not Doherty, we'll just take it from there."
