Underwood Clicking with Future Heels

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- North Carolina verbal commitment Shawn Underwood will play a slightly different position in the Shrine Bowl on Saturday.

"I'm being used as a nose [guard] – I'm lined up directly over center," Underwood said. "I usually play [defensive] tackle, but I played nose some [as a junior] because our nose got hurt last year.

"[At nose guard] you face a lot of double teams. So you've got to prepare yourself for that – you don't know which way it's coming from. It's a lot of reading the [offensive] guard, as well as the center."

Off the field, Underwood is bonding with the seven other UNC pledges on the North Carolina roster.

"A lot of funny dudes," Underwood said. "I didn't really know most of them before this week. So I've been developing a lot of friendships this week."

In particular, Underwood said he has "clicked" with fellow defensive lineman Devonte Brown.

On Sunday night, Underwood spoke to Sam Pittman, his primary UNC recruiter.

"[We talked about] basically how it was going for the first few days and how I'm doing," Underwood said. "We're just getting to know each other."

Underwood has scheduled his UNC official visit for the weekend of Jan. 21.

Any other official visits, Underwood says are "up in the air."

"Probably, the only other [official visit] I'll take will be [NC] State," Underwood said. "I've got to talk to them about that one, though."

Underwood says that both Florida and Penn State are pushing for official visits.
