If consistently being inconsistent counted in the ACC standings, N.C. State and North Carolina would be on top of the conference. Basketball is a game of lead changes and emotional swings, but the Tar Heels and Wolfpack have turned every ACC game into an adventure, which should lead to an interesting pairing this afternoon when the teams meet at the Smith Center.

It's easy to look at the records, their respective places in the ACC and recent performances and say, typical N.C. State-North Carolina. Going into today's rivalry game in Chapel Hill (2 p.m. on ESPN), the Tar Heels are on a roll (winners of seven of their last eight) and the Wolfpack are reeling (losers of four of their last five).

Last season, North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams said after Wednesday night's win at Miami, "I felt like every game that came down to the stretch, something good happened for the other team, and something bad happened to our team." That hasn't been the case so much this year - in big part because of freshman Harrison Barnes.

Wolfpack fans are ready to read coach Sidney Lowe his last rites regardless of today's outcome in Chapel Hill. N.C. State travels to the Smith Center to face North Carolina, and even an upset would provide just a respite from the calls to find new leadership.
