Freshmen Impressive in UNC Spring Football Game

Chapel Hill, N.C. - True freshman Ronnie McGill rushed for 104 yards in his Kenan Stadium debut on Saturday to lead the White team to a 21-10 victory over the Blue team in North Carolina's annual spring football game.

"He is going to be a fine player," head coach John Bunting said of McGill. "He's got a great attitude and loves to play football, and he always has a smile on his face. He likes to play and he likes to practice. He's just fun to be around."

McGill and quarterback C.J. Stephens, who completed 11 of 17 passes for 113 yards, led the White team offense, while sophomore cornerback Cedric Holt added an interception for the White defense.

Senior Topher Roberts had a great kicking game for the Tar Heels, booting a 49-yard field goal early in the second quarter which he followed with a 42-yard field goal five minutes later. Senior Dan Orner started the game's scoring with a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Neither team's offense started off particularly strong as the defense played well throughout the scrimmage. Freshman Melik Brown sacked Darian Durant in the end zone to put the White on the scoreboard.

Late in the second quarter, McGill busted through the defensive line for a 10-yard touchdown run to put the White team ahead 15-3. Two minutes later, junior Chad Scott scored a touchdown r the Blue team to draw within 15-10 at the half.

"It was unbelievable," McGill said of his first touchdown in Chapel Hill. "My coach was telling me to make a big play, and I didn't want to let him down."

Holt's interception and Brown's spirited play highlighted a defensive effort that held Carolina's high powered passing attack in check.

"Throughout the entire spring, we [the offense] had the edge over the defense," Durant said. "They came out today fighting and they fought to win. I was very surprised at the way they played."
