Felton named MVP at basketball banquet

CHAPEL HILL - University of North Carolina freshman point guard Raymond Felton was named the team's Most Valuable Player, the first freshman in UNC history to earn that award. Felton received his honor at the annual end-of-season banquet Tuesday night at the Smith Center.

Felton led the Tar Heels in assists with a UNC-freshman record 236 and added 12.9 points per game. The Latta, S.C., native led the team in steals with 56. He was also named Carolina's best defender.

Freshman forward Rashad McCants received the prestigious Jimmie Dempsey Award, which is given to the team's overall statistical leader. McCants averaged a team-high 17.0 points, a UNC freshman record. The Asheville, N.C., native had 4.6 rebounds per game and shot a UNC-high 41.4 percent from three-point range. He was second on the team in steals with 49. He scored 594 points, the second-most by a UNC freshman in history.

Point guard Jonathan Holmes was named the team's Most Outstanding Senior. Senior forward Will Johnson was named the team's Most Inspirational Player and received the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete award. Holmes and Johnson were named co-captains of the 2002-03 team.
