Eric Ebron Journal: 'It Was My Day'

Eric Ebron, a Tar Heel tight end signee from Greensboro (N.C.) Smith, is filing weekly journal entries at Inside Carolina as he counts down to enrolling at UNC in May.

  Entry #6: Official Visit

I went on my official visit right after losing to High Point (N.C.) Central in a playoff game. I was upset and mad that the season was over. But the only thing that stopped me from moping was the fact that I was going to Carolina for the weekend. I didn't know what to expect, but I knew I was going to have a good time.

Coach Allen Mogridge met me at my house, because my mom couldn't drop me off. We were driving and we started talking about the game. We kind of bonded right then and there a little bit more. On the way there, we stopped to got something to eat and then I checked into the hotel, which was HUGE.

I didn't get to bed until late and then woke up real early – 7 o'clock-ish. I ate breakfast and it was huge – I was loving that. We toured the campus and then went to the football game.

On Sunday, I had my one-on-one with Coach Butch Davis. We talked about life. He talked about school. He talked about football.

The best part about the official visit was it was my day. Everybody is there to satisfy me, make me happy, and it's just fun. It's probably the most fun part of the recruiting process.

And you eat so much – oh man, did they feed us and it was delicious. For example, right before the football game they had roast beef, chicken wings, ribs, and then they had all sorts of ice cream with create-your-own sundae – it was like heaven on earth. And that was one meal.

What made the official visit even better was I took it with T.J. Thorpe and Travis Riley (we planned that, by the way). We hung out at Quinton Coples' room on Saturday night and that was fun.

I met new recruits like Alex Dixon – we claim that as T.J.'s recruit because he was working on him and I was working on Devonte Brown the whole time. When they committed the same day, T.J. and I dapped each other up.

I was really going to take all five of my official visits. I decided the first visit would go to North Carolina to give them the first shot. Prior to the Carolina official visit, I talked to Coach Tosh Lupoi from California about scheduling an official visit – we kept making dates. And I was talking to a coach from South Carolina and a whole bunch of other coaches about official visits. My five official visits probably would have been Carolina, California, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Rutgers.

Coach Mo' knew I was thinking about taking other official visits. He said, "Man, I'll be crushed if you go on other official visits." I told him, "Oh man, don't worry about it."

It was crazy with other schools continuing to recruit me, even though I was committed. They were still coming to my school – Miami, Virginia, Virginia Tech. I used to stay in contact with Rutgers. I talked to Coach Greg Schiano a couple of times on the phone and on Facebook. I also talked to their tight ends coach and defensive line coach.

I would have taken more official visits, but I really liked my time at Carolina on my official visit and I was committed to them. And my mom, I wanted her to come with me to these other visits, but she was too busy. So I said, "Mom, if you don't want to go, I won't go."

Before I end this entry – shout out to Tyler Alberts, my future roommate.
