Entry #8: Coach Davis
One day, I was outside with a whole bunch of people and my phone rings. I had no idea who it was. I couldn't recognize the number, so I answer and a guy – I was sure it was a coach – said, "Hey, Eric, how are you doing?" I replied, "I'm good," but never asked who it was, because I didn't want to embarrass myself.
He said, "I want you to come down here." I was thinking it couldn't be a coach from around here. He kept going on and going on and I kept thinking I didn't know who it was. He was saying, "You're a big part of our recruiting class," and I was trying to pick up clues to figure out who it was, but I pretended like I knew.
I told a whole lot of coaches that I'm going to save their number and I forget to save it. When they called me and I didn't have their number saved, I tried not to embarrass myself and just pretended that I knew who it is and usually figured it out.
Well, we hung up and weeks later I still had no idea who it was. Then one day Coach Mo' said, "Yeah, I heard you talked to Coach Davis a couple of weeks ago." I was like, "Oh, man, that was Coach Davis?!" I thought I screwed up and he wouldn't like me anymore.
But in my defense, that was the first time I talked to Coach Davis on the phone – I only talked to him in person before that. So I had no way of knowing that was his number.
When it came to my decision to go to UNC, Coach Davis was like the icing on the cake. He is a convincing guy. He just has that effect on you where when he talks to you that you walk away thinking "Oh, yeah, I'm going to North Carolina."
Coach Davis is a straight forward guy. He's not going to beat around the bush – he's not going to tell you what you want to hear. If he's proud of you, he'll let you know. If he's disappointed in you, he'll let you know he's disappointed in you.
When I first met Coach Davis, I thought he was going to be just like every other head coach. Every coach has that side when they're trying to reel you in and then when they get you, they're different. I waited for that side to pop out, but he has remained the same.
And then you have my high school coaches who know Coach Davis' background – every program he's been to, he's done ‘this and this and this.' I know what he did at Miami, but I didn't know about his days with the Dallas Cowboys. And really, the only reason I knew what he did at Miami was because my mom's boyfriend has a friend that played for him when he was at Miami.
But it's good to know you have a head coach that knows what he's doing.
