Patterson: 'It Was My Dream School'

North Carolina's newest commitment -- J.J. Patterson, a four-star defensive tackle from Roanoke Rapids, N.C. -- talks to about his decision.

Why North Carolina?

"To make it simple: it was my dream school. If you have a chance to go to your dream school, I don't see why not."

You've been contemplating committing for a few weeks now. What pushed you over the edge?

"I thought about it and I was like, ‘I really want to go to this school. This is my dream school. I don't want to let it slip away.'"

When did you make realize you were going to actually commit?

"As soon as I woke up [on Saturday], I knew what I was going to do."

When you arrived on campus and were walking around, what sort of effect did that have on you?

"It made me think about it and I was like ‘Yeah, I'm for sure now. This is where I want to be. No more changing my mind.'"

When did you let the staff know?

"I was talking to Coach [Butch] Davis and he was asking me questions and I was asking him questions about the school. Then he asked me when would I be ready to be a Tar Heel. And I said ‘Right now.' That made it official."

What was Davis' reaction when you committed?

"He was stoked about it."

Did you let any of the assistant coaches know you were going to do it?

"Coach [Marcus] Berry, I dropped a few hints to him when I got in that day. I told him I would have a surprise for him."

How do you feel now that you've committed?

"I feel pretty hyped about it. I feel like I had [already] made the decision [in my mind], so I had been preparing myself for it. It hasn't hit me yet and probably won't until I'm there."

How firm is this decision – any more visits to other schools?

"I'm pretty much locked into my decision."

Position wise, you're capable of playing on either side of the ball. What position is UNC recruiting you for?

"I did get the offer for offensive line and defensive line. But a while back I told them I wanted to play defense, so I committed for defense."

With that, what are your thoughts about playing on the same defensive line as high school teammate Kareem Martin again?

"That would be great."

Have you talked to Kareem about it, yet?

"Yes, he knows. He was pretty stoked about it, too."

What are your thoughts about continuing that pipeline from Roanoke Rapids to UNC?

"When I made my decision, I wasn't really thinking about it. I didn't think about Kentwan Balmer, who's from the area, Trase [Jones], Kareem, or Darrius [Massenburg]. It was all my decision and where I wanted to go."

What are your thoughts on playing under Joe Robinson?

"What I've seen him do with the defensive line so far in the little time that he's been there, I'm excited to see what he can do with my defensive line skills."
