Eric Ebron Journal: Fan Support

Eric Ebron, a Tar Heel tight end signee from Greensboro (N.C.) Smith, is filing weekly journal entries at Inside Carolina as he counts down to enrolling at UNC.

  Entry #15: The Fans

I get noticed -- it's ridiculous. I'm not nearly as big as I'd like to be, but I still get noticed. I did not know it would be this much publicity. When I go to a place like the mall, everybody knows who I am. Then when I went to Carolina's Spring Game, that was ridiculous.

It feels like UNC is everywhere.

Every time I go to the McDonald's near my house, they always say "Hey, good luck at UNC next year." One day, I was at T.J. Maxx and this guy had on this hot UNC jacket and he said "You're that tight end dude. Go Heels."

I get autograph requests, but Coach Mo' told me I couldn't do it, so I just let it go. I tell them "I'm sorry, I can't do it." They'll say, "Please take a picture with my daughter" or "Take a picture with my child." People hand me infants and newborns. It's crazy.

Every time I'm on campus at UNC, I get a stare. Some don't know who I am -- yet.

At a UNC game, the fans are crazy. The fan support is exactly like you hope for as a player. They're always into the game. There's never a dull moment, unless you're getting your butt kicked – but even then when UNC makes a good play everybody is getting live. I just love the whole Carolina atmosphere.

After the Duke and Carolina basketball game this year, we were walking down the street and my coach yells "Tar" and everybody in the whole street yells "Heels." I just started cracking up. I just thought ‘Wow, it's going to be like this.'

I can't wait to have that sort of support when I step on the field this fall on Sept. 3.

I love the fans.
