Classic are experiencing the problem faced by many a bride planning a San Diego outdoor wedding: Sure, the weather is usually gorgeous here, but can you depend on it? The answer – which is, sadly, no – is fouling plans for the Veterans Day college basketball game to be played Friday on the flight deck of the Navy aircraft carrier Carl Vinson. Weather forecasters say another cold, wintery storm is heading this way. It may hit North Island on Friday afternoon, just in time for the 4:15 p.m. tip-off.

When the Spartans board the USS Carl Vinson for their game against top-ranked North Carolina, Thornton's brother Thomas - a second lieutenant in the Marines - will be in attendance. So, too, will Thornton's parents, his younger brother Judd, a cousin who works for the San Diego Police Department and two of his aunts who also have roots in Southern California. Thomas Thornton, who is three years older than Austin, was originally stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. But two weeks ago, he was transferred to San Diego and drove to his new home base at Camp Pendleton.
