Wednesday with Withers

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Everett Withers talked with reporters on Wednesday as he prepares for his final game on the UNC sidelines and prepares his team for the Independence Bowl.

Can you talk about your initial meeting with the guys after it was announced that Fedora would be coming in next year?:

"Just like a normal meeting, nothing special. Just 'let's get ready to play a good football team in Missouri and get ready for this bowl.'"

How disappointed were you in the decision?:

"Coaches are day to day. You're always disappointed when you don't get something. But as a coach you learn to move on fast. "

Have you had any contact with Ohio State? There's word you're going to join their staff.:

"I have had contact with Ohio State. Nothing's official yet, but we're working that way."

So you expect to be on Urban Meyer's staff?:

"I've had contact with Ohio State. When it's official, you'll know."

Does the staff and players feel a responsibility to finish strong?:

"Yeah, I think we feel responsible to each other and the seniors. It's another opportunity to play another ball game, so we're looking forward to that."

If you don't stay here in any capacity--:

"I'm not staying here in any capacity."

How important is it for you then to go out and finish strong and leave as a winner after your one year as head coach here?:

"I'm looking forward to playing the game and we're going to play as hard as we can to win the bowl game."

How tough is it to prep for a bowl while worrying about the staff and where you all are going to end up?:

"Every year I've been in this profession - I think it's 24 - this time of year gets tough on a lot of people. If you've been doing this long enough, you go through these. It's just part of the gig."

Now that the head coach decision has been resolved, do you think it'll be any different than a week ago?:

"I don't think so. Kids, once they get out on the grass, it doesn't make a difference. Just prepare for a game, play a game and win a game."

Are you glad it didn't drag on?:

"Yeah, I guess you could say it didn't drag on, I don't know, but I'm looking forward to moving forward."

Do you get nostalgic when you're out here with these guys now knowing the time has almost come to an end with this group of players?:

"The life of any football team is not long and all football teams are special to you and this oen is special because of what these kids have gone through. My obligation is to try and help these seniors go out the right way."
