Jones Cleared

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior wide receiver Dwight Jones has been cleared by the NCAA to play in the Independence Bowl less than 24 hours after UNC declared him ineligible for committing a secondary violation.

"We got word back from our compliance through the NCAA that Dwight has been cleared, so Dwight is eligible for the bowl game," UNC head coach Everett Withers told reporters prior to Wednesday's practice. "

Jones's eligibility came into question after the Burlington, N.C. native allowed his name and photo to be used to promote a New Year's Eve birthday party for him in his hometown. That party has since been canceled.

"I'm just happy for Dwight," Withers said. "I'm happy for his ability to play his last bowl game for Carolina. Obviously, we're happy for the team and we're happy for Dwight."

Jones practiced with his teammates on Wednesday.

When asked if the NCAA made the right decision in clearing Jones, Withers responded: "Yes, no question. I don't think there's any doubt."
