Decision Looming for McCalister

Alex McCalister has settled on a date for his collegiate announcement.

"He'll make the decision next Tuesday," West Forsyth head football coach Adrian Snow said. "We're trying to finalize [the details] today. But the date is pretty much in stone. A couple of schools have asked him to postpone it – like North Carolina, they would like for him to wait – but he's not going to do that."

McCalister, a 6-foot-5, 203-pound defensive end, will chose between finalists Florida, Georgia Tech, and North Carolina on Tuesday, Jan. 17. He has unofficially visited each finalist at least once, officially visited Georgia Tech in December, and will officially visit Florida this coming weekend. Snow says that McCalsiter does not have an official trip scheduled with UNC.

With a little over a week before his decision date and one official trip left to make, Snow believes McCalister has a leader in his mind.

"I think so, but I'm not going to say who," Snow said. "He is an 18-year old young man, so one day it's one and one day it's the other. They've all done a great job recruiting him and I think he'll have a tough decision."

In addition to the lack of an official trip, working against UNC is having a brand new coaching staff, as opposed to Florida and Georgia Tech, which have had their staffs in place for McCalister's entire recruitment.

"[UNC] is kind of behind the eight ball just in the sense of building the relationship," Snow said. "Coach [Larry] Fedora has done a good job. We've talked numerous times. He spent most of Saturday with him at the [basketball] game. It's just one of those things – they've had to get in there in a short time."

Speaking of Saturday's visit, it was UNC's last legitimate chance to make a push for McCalister.

"It went well," said Snow, who accompanied McCalister Saturday. "We went to the game. We went back to the football facility and [McCalister] talked to the coaches for a while – Coach [Deke] Adams, the defensive line coach."

All three finalists sent coaches by West Forsyth last week to speak to Snow and McCalister - UNC sent assistant coaches Adams and Vic Koenning.

"They're pitching their school and what they feel like they can get done," Snow said. "Really, they're just trying to build relationships, because I think that's what it's going to end up being."

McCalister was accompanied on his Saturday visit by his friend, and UNC verbal commitment, Phillip Williamson. McCalister and Williamson played Pop Warner together as youths.

"[McCalister] has to be his own person," Snow said. "He's got to make the decision for himself. I know it would be nice to go somewhere where he might know somebody, but there are a couple North Carolina kids going to Florida and there's also some at Georgia Tech, too.

"Alex just has to see what's best for him and then he just has to pull that trigger."
