Mumford Getting Acquainted with New Staff

Tristan Mumford attended North Carolina's Junior Day on Saturday. It was his first visit to Chapel Hill of the Larry Fedora era.

"It was pretty good," Mumford said. "I'd say it was decent. I have to get used to the new staff down here. There was nothing negative about it. It's just I don't really know the new staff. It will probably take me a little time to get used to them."

Under the previous regime, Mumford, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound athlete from Statesville (N.C.), had established a relationship with Kenny Browning. Dave Duggan is currently recruiting Mumford for UNC.

"I talked to a couple of [the UNC coaches on Saturday], but I didn't get to talk to them like I wanted to," Mumford said. "We got there, we ate, and then we played some games. But we talked to some [of the coaches] – I was with Coach Duggan most of the day and Coach [Marcus] Berry."

One item that has become clearer is the position UNC is recruiting Mumford for.

"They talked to me about the running back position [initially]," Mumford said. "And then I was talking to Coach Duggan. He told me they're going to be short on linebackers, because Zach Brown and another linebacker [Ebele Okakpu] are leaving and then the other two behind them [Fabby Desir and Kevin Reddick] they'll be leaving by the time I get there, as well. So he said they'll be short on linebackers. He asked me would I rather be offered as a linebacker or running back, and I just took linebacker."

Linebacker also happens to be Mumford's preferred position.

Mumford, who has collected scholarship offers from East Carolina, UNC, NC State, and Wake Forest, maintains that he's "wide open" with no favorite schools.

This weekend, Mumford has been invited to three junior days – Duke, Virginia, and Wake Forest –and has yet to decide which he'll actually attend.

"I probably won't know [my plans] until Friday," Mumford said.
