Phil Ford to the Sixers? Not true, says UNC

School refutes report that Ford has been hired in Philly.

2:30 pm - According to the UNC Sports Information department, the NY Post report is false. Phil Ford has not spoken with anyone, including Dean Smith, about the matter, SID Steve Kirschner told IC.

8:15 am - According to NBA Insider Peter Vecsey in today's NY Post, Philadelphia 76ers head coach Larry Brown has hired a fellow Tar Heel onto his coaching staff -- Phil Ford.

The UNC Sports Information department could not confirm the report.

Ford was an assistant coach at Carolina from 1988-2000, which included six Final Fours.

He is best remembered for running the Four Corners offense in the late 1970s for the Tar Heels. Ford is UNC's all-time leading scorer with 2,290 points.

He currently holds a position in the Rams Club (Educational Foundation), having left the coaching staff upon Matt Doherty's arrival last summer.

The Philadelphia organization is already filled with Tar Heels. Brown ('63) has John Kuester ('77) as an assistant coach and Dave Hanners (76), who coached alongside Ford at Carolina, as a scout. George Lynch, who led the 1993 Heels to the national championship, started 80 games for the Sixers last season, averaging 8.4 points and 7.2 rebounds.
