Manhattan hires Cason

David Cason, who was the director of operations for the Carolina basketball program the last three years, has been hired as the second assistant at Manhattan. Cason is the third assistant from the Matt Doherty regime to land a new job, as Doug Wojcik is now at Michigan State and Fred Quartlebaum is at Iowa State (also, administrative asst. L.J. Hepp is now on the Stanford staff).

RIVERDALE, NY (June 16, 2003) – Head men's basketball coach Bobby Gonzalez announced today the hiring of two new assistants to his staff for the 2003-04 season.

David Cason has been hired as Gonzalez's second assistant, while Kevin Murphy joins the Jasper staff as the third assistant.

Cason comes to Manhattan from the University of North Carolina where he served as the Director of Men's Basketball Operations for three years. Prior to his stint with the Tar Heels, Cason originally joined head coach Matt Doherty at Notre Dame and made the journey with him from South Bend to Chapel Hill. Cason's coaching resume also includes assistant coaching positions at Eastern Illinois (1996-99) and Illinois State (1995-96). A former standout at Southern High School in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, Cason went on to play two years of college ball at the College of Southern Idaho. He led the Scenic West Conference in assists in his two years there before transferring to Illinois State. In his two years with the Redbirds, Cason once again led the Missouri Valley Conference in assists and was named team captain as a senior. Cason replaces Travis Lyons, who has assumed an assistant coaching position at Fordham University.
