"We didn't end the regular season the way we wanted to. We lost three in a row, a couple road games, and then we lost a home game to Virginia [on Sunday] in overtime. But the guys, as long as they continue to fight, continue to get better and be together, that's really what's important, and seeing our young guys continuing to get better, that's really what's important. I'd love for the guys to taste victory one more time or two more times or whatever it is down the stretch here. They've worked hard. It's not easy to win games. But I'd like to see that." – Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon
"That's the best, most complete game we've played all year. We defended. We rebounded. We executed. We shared the ball." – Turgeon following his team's victory over Wake Forest on Thursday
Season to Date: Maryland enters Friday's contest with a 17-14 (6-10) record. The Terrapins have lost 10 of their last 15 games and currently rank 111th in the NCAA's RPI, so head coach Mark Turgeon's squad will have to win the ACC Tournament to earn a bid into the NCAA Tournament.
ACC Tournament Results: Terrell Stoglin scored nine straight points in a 20-4 second-half run to blow open a close game against Wake Forest as the Terrapins posted an 82-60 victory. Stoglin paced Maryland with 25 points and seven rebounds, while Nick Faust added 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting. The Terrapins shot 54.4 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Demon Deacons, 39-24.
Star Resurgence? It didn't take long for Stoglin to fall from a sure-fire first-team All-ACC performer to an afterthought during a ACC season in which he was benched by his own coach and criticized for his play by an opposing coach. The ACC's leading scorer averaged 18.6 points on 29.0 percent shooting (27-93) over his final five regular season contests, but Thursday's showing drew praise from his head coach. Stoglin connected on better than 50 percent of his shots (8-of-14) for the first time in six games and posted a positive assist-turnover ratio (4-3) for the just the second time in nine games.
Just the Stats: In ACC games, Maryland ranks fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (35.0), 10th in field goal percentage (40.5) and 12th in assist-turnover ratio (0.7) and assists (9.9). The Terps rank sixth in field goal percentage defense (42.0), seventh in 3-point field goal percentage defense (32.9), eighth in rebounding margin (minus-0.2) and ninth in turnover margin (minus-2.38).
Last Meeting: North Carolina defeated Maryland, 88-64, on Feb. 29 at the Smith Center. Tyler Zeller delivered on Senior Night with 30 points and eight rebounds, including a building record with 20 made free throws and 23 attempts. Kendall Marshall broke Ed Cota's single-season assist record with his 285th assist of the season on a pass to Harrison Barnes early in the second half.
Series History: North Carolina leads the all-time series with Maryland, 117-57. The Tar Heels are 12-3 against the Terrapins in the ACC Tournament.
