Gator Pledge Attends 'Freak Show'

In spite of his verbal commitment to Florida, Marqui Hawkins attended "Fedora's Freak Show," a special camp hosted by North Carolina last week.

"I wanted to visit more places and I heard there was going to be a lot of competition at DB," Hawkins said. "I heard there were going to be top players, so I wanted to compete with them.

"I also wanted to meet the receiver coach and visit North Carolina."

Hawkins, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound wide receiver from Columbus (Ga.) Carver, found plenty of quality competition at UNC during one-on-one drills.

"There were a couple good players out there," Hawkins said. "There were some good battles out there. I felt like I did well."

Additionally, Hawkins received quality instruction from Gunter Brewer, UNC's wide receivers coach.

"He's a great coach," Hawkins said. "I feel he knows what he's talking about. He loves his players, he loves recruits, and he knows good players.

"He was telling me how good I could be if I keep working."

"Fedora's Freak Show" delivered an added bonus for Hawkins.

"The atmosphere was great," Hawkins said. "It felt like I was really playing in a college game. Warming up, it felt like we were going to play for real and I was ready to play."

Following the camp, Hawkins is now strongly considering UNC.

"I'm really interested in North Carolina, but I'm still committed to Florida," Hawkins said. "There will be a point when I'm finished visiting all my schools and if I don't like them, I'll stick with Florida."

The visits Hawkins is referring to include summer trips and official visits. He has already visited Clemson and Duke in addition to UNC, and plans to visit Florida, Florida State, Mississippi State, and Tennessee in some capacity.
