Brewer, who played high school football himself in Columbus, Miss., stopped recruiting Thomas, a 6- foot-5, 300-pounder, once he moved on to UNC. But Thomas's father recently reached out to Brewer via email to reconnect and also set up the visit.
"I just want to expand my options open and I really like Coach Brewer and Coach [Larry] Fedora," Thomas said. "I just want to see if we can build up a relationship somewhere else, I guess."
Thomas's connections to UNC's staff don't stop there. As a coach on Southern Miss' staff, Chris Kapilovic recruited Thomas. Besides several conversations with Kapilovic, Thomas has conversed with Larry Fedora in the past.
"We haven't really been able to talk much, lately," Thomas said. "I haven't really talked to them since they got to North Carolina. That's kind of the whole point of me going up there – to get familiar with everybody up there and see the campus."
Due to the lack of recent conversation, Thomas is unsure if he has a UNC scholarship offer. He does hold offers from Mississippi and Mississippi State.
Thomas is being recruited as a left tackle. A starter since his freshman year at Columbus, he has played every position along the offensive line, except center, but has the most experience at left tackle.
The UNC visit is part of a three-school tour that will also include Auburn and Tennessee. He's also scheduled to visit Stanford on July 23.
"I'm just trying to branch out," Thomas said. "All I really know is the SEC – mostly the SEC West. I haven't been anywhere out east."
Previously, Thomas has visited Alabama, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi, and Southern Miss.
Although he's keeping his options open, Mississippi State is Thomas's leader.
"[Mississippi State] is 20 minutes down the road from me, so I've grown up with them and everybody talks about them around here," Thomas said.
