CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina junior linebacker Darius Lipford reinjured his left ACL during a rehab session last Thursday and will undergo reconstructive surgery that will force him to miss the 2012 season. A school official confirmed the news to InsideCarolina.com on Thursday.
The injury occurred on July 12. Surgery is scheduled for August.
Lipford originally tore his ACL during the Independence Bowl versus Missouri on Dec. 26, 2011. He will red-shirt this fall and have two years of eligibility remaining.
The Lenoir, N.C. native started four games at linebacker in 2011 and tallied 42 tackles.
