Thoroughbreds Win UNC 7-on-7

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Virginia Thoroughbreds edged Raleigh (N.C.) Wakefield, 28-21, in the finals to win North Carolina's fifth annual "Beast of the Hill" Seven-on-Seven Passing Tournament on Friday.

Virginia Thoroughbreds, which didn't lose a single contest all day, is an "all-star" seven-on-seven team, which included UNC recruits Taquan Mizzell, Jamil Kamara, and Quin Blanding. Two of the three played both ways – Mizzell (RB and CB) and Blanding (WR, S), while Kamara solely played wide receiver.

The event consisted of 20 teams, which were broken into three "pods." Three of the 20 teams included at least one UNC verbal commitment – Wakefield, Durham (N.C.) Hillside, and Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek. Those three squads plus Virginia Thoroughbreds were the four teams that qualified for the championship playoff.

Co-finalist, Wakefield, was led by the quarterback-receiver combo of South Carolina pledge Connor Mitch and UNC verbal commitment Jordan Fieulleteau. After going 4-1 in the "Orange Pod," Wakefield defeated Hillside, 28-16, in the semi-finals. However, it lost on an interception on the final play of the championship contest.

The loss to Wakefield was Hillside's lone blemish. Hillside, which were highlighted by UNC commitments Khris Francis and Korrin Wiggins at running back and safety, respectively, won the "Blue Pod" with a 5-0 record.

Mallard Creek, which was without star wide receiver Marquez North but had UNC pledge Brian Walker at cornerback, went 4-1 in the league play, which was good enough to receive the playoff tournament's wildcard spot. In the semi-finals, Mallard Creek was ousted by Virginia Thoroughbreds, 13-6.

Wakefield, Mallard Creek, and Wilmington (N.C.) Hoggard tied for first place in the "Orange Pod" with a 4-1 record. By following tiebreaker procedures, Wakefield was granted the automatic berth into the playoff tournament. The same tiebreaker procedures gave Mallard Creek the wildcard spot over Hoggard.
