Fedora's Injury Policy

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – If you're curious about injury details during UNC's training camp, don't expect much information, or any at all, to come from first-year head coach Larry Fedora.

** Fedora brushed aside an injury question during his media day press conference on Saturday, noting a few players that had yet to be cleared medically practice before saying that he didn't have any more information in front of him.

When asked about wide receiver T.J. Thorpe's broken left foot on Tuesday, Fedora laid out his injury policy to the media in attendance.

"I don't know what to tell you because I don't talk about injuries," he said. "Here's what I'll tell you about injuries, guys – I will tell you about anybody that we lose for the season and that's it.

"We haven't lost him for the season, so I really don't have anything to say for him."

Thorpe was present for practice with crutches and a boot on his left foot.

When asked if UNC has lost anybody for the season, Fedora replied: "Not that I know of."

As of Friday, freshman wide receiver Quinshad Davis was one of four players yet to be cleared medically for practice. Davis was not at practice on Tuesday, but Fedora confirmed that he is expected to return to campus Tuesday evening.

After five years of Butch Davis providing in-depth injury updates throughout the season, Fedora's new policy will take some getting used to, both for media and fans.

** Tim Jackson spent his first two seasons at North Carolina lined up at defensive end. Now that he's packed on roughly 35 pounds since his enrollement – now weighing 270 – Jackson is earning some reps with the first team at defensive tackle.

"We're looking at some different people in some different places right now," Fedora said. "Tim's one guy that we'd like to see what he can do inside. It would be nice if he can learn both spots so that we can bounce him in and out depending on where we are depth-wise through the year."

Jackson's not the only lineman that was tried out a new position through the first five days of training camp.

"If you watch the offensive line, it's the same thing," Fedora said. "We've got guys playing almost every position, except center. A couple of our guards are getting work at center. It's the same thing; we're just trying to build depth throughout those positions, because you've got to be prepared."

** With Thorpe sidelined and Todd Harrelson no longer on the team, two-thirds of UNC's preseason depth chart at punt and kickoff returner is gone. Reggie Wilkins, Kedrick Davis, Gio Bernard, Romar Morris, Roy Smith and Damien Washington, among others, are some of the players currently returning kicks.

"We're working about seven or eight guys mainly to get a feel for how good they handle the ball in that situation, whether it be punt return or kick return," Fedora said.

** Sophomore wide receivers Sean Tapley and Reggie Wilkins were not at practice on Tuesday, but there doesn't appear to be any reason for concern.

"I wouldn't be surprised if they're out there tomorrow morning," Fedora said.
