Thatch commits to Carolina!

Inside Carolina has learned that Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley defensive back Martel Thatch became a Tar Heel Saturday morning.

"They were always at the top of my list," Thatch said. "My parents and I drove down Saturday morning. I had already decided that I was going to commit."

The 6-2, 180-pound safety runs a 4.4-forty and is ranked No. 14 in TheInsiders' N.C. Top 30.

"I told Coach Bunting about it and he was very excited. In fact he gave me a big hug. Carolina was always where my heart wanted to go and I just went with my heart."

Thatch recorded 91 tackles and 9 interceptions, returning three for touchdowns, en route to All-Conference honors.

"The thing that gives Martel an edge, is that he is a prototypical free safety," said Dudley head coach Victor Floyd added. "He's big, he can run, he's athletic and he can jump. He possesses all of the tools you would look for in a big time free safety. He'll come down and hit you and he can play man coverage."

Thatch has two teammates that are also being recruited by North Carolina - running back Jamaal Edwards and defensive lineman Demario Pressley.
