UNC Hiring West

Ron West will fill the final vacancy on the UNC football coaching staff, multiple sources confirm. West spent 2012 as the co-defensive coordinator and linebacker coach at Arizona State. An official announcement from UNC is expected later this month.

UNC associate head coach for defense Vic Koenning was heavily involved in the hiring process, according to a source, and Koenning coached with West at Clemson from 2005-08 and at Illinois from 2010-11.

That common background means West is very familiar with the 4-2-5 defense, and its hybrid positions, that UNC head coach Larry Fedora brought with him to Chapel Hill. West instituted a "Devil" position at Arizona State last season, which is the same linebacker/defensive end hybrid that is referred to as the "Bandit" at UNC.

Under the guidance of Koenning, West and new UNC defensive line coach Keith Gilmore, the 2011 Illinois defense ranked seventh in the nation.
