UNC Offers Russell

Roy Williams made his first visit to Montverde (Fla.) Academy to watch D'Angelo Russell on Friday. The UNC coach saw all he needed to see, as he offered the 6-4 junior guard a scholarship.

Williams, who was accompanied by assistant coach Hubert Davis, left no doubt that he covets the 2014 sharpshooter.

"He was like, 'It's one thing when a coach says they want you and it's another to say I need you so I want you to know you have a scholly to UNC,'" Russell said of his conversation with Williams.

Davis made multiple visits to watch Russell during Montverde's season, including seeing Russell hit five three-pointers in the second quarter of a game at the Roselle (N.J.) Classic in January, and maintained steady contact with Russell's father in recent months.

Russell was invited by the UNC staff to attend the season finale against Duke last month but was unable to attend. Other schools he lists interest in include Georgetown, Indiana, Kentucky, LSU, Louisville, Memphis, Michigan State, Missouri, NC State, Nebraska and Ohio State.

Russell, who is ranked the No. 1 shooting guard in the 2014 class by Scout.com and No. 11 prospect overall, will begin play on the EYBL circuit next weekend, teaming up with UNC commitment Joel Berry on the Each 1 Team 1 team.
