Barnett Awaiting UNC Offer

HAMPTON, Va. --- Jordan Barnett is not yet sure what criteria he's looking for in a college, but many colleges know they want him. And his growing list of scholarship offers may add another soon.

The 6-7 junior forward from St. Louis (Mo.) CBC averaged 13.3 points and 7.0 rebounds in his first weekend on the EYBL circuit and is putting up similar numbers this weekend.

"I'm an athletic wing that can slide down to the four and get you some rebounds, play some defense, get some steals, you name it," Barnett said.

That versatile skillset has attracted major college interest, with a list so long that Barnett forgets some of his suitors. But he does have some early leaders.

"Along the top are Florida, Michigan State, Stanford, Purdue … and after that everybody else is in the mix," he said.

When asked to detail "everybody else," he listed Iowa, Kansas State, Miami, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma State and St. Louis. All but UNC have offered.

Barnett knows he'd like to go to school away from home -- "(St. Louis) is a great city, but I want to see the world, live different places … I want to get as far away from St. Louis as possible" -- and he knows his parents will factor heavily into his decision.

"My mom and dad, they have their top five and they don't waste any time telling me where they think I should go or where they want me to go," he said. "So their decisions will definitely have an impact.

"My dad is in favor of Florida. My mom is in favor of a couple schools."

Beyond that, he doesn't know what he's looking for.

"Next step is to whittle it down a bit and take some visits," Barnett said. "I want to figure out what kind of school I want to go to. It's kind of stressful to have all these schools and not know what you're looking for.

"I might just come out of nowhere and commit. I might wait. I don't really know."

Head coaches from Florida and Stanford were in town this past week, and a visit to Stanford appears to be on the docket. The wildcard school in this recruitment may be North Carolina.

"They told me they have a lot of interest," Barnett said of the Tar Heels. "They haven't offered as far as I know. They are really interested."

The UNC interest is relatively new. Assistant coach Steve Robinson watched Barnett's 33-point, 14-rebound performance on Jan. 18 and Roy Williams visited CBC High School on Feb. 20.

"He showed up at my school during the high school basketball season," Barnett said of the UNC head coach. "We had a decent talk."

Williams has seen Barnett play once each of the last two weekends – first last weekend in Los Angeles against UNC commitment Joel Berry, and then this weekend in Hampton against UNC commitment Justin Jackson.

"My dad actually sent me a text message saying they were going to offer," Barnett said of UNC. "So we'll see what happens with that.

"(My dad) has talked to the coaches. He just sent me a text message a couple days ago saying that North Carolina was going to offer. And I'm waiting on that."
