Tomlin, a 6-foot, 215-pound linebacker from Marietta (Ga.), says that relationship and those feelings have just gradually flourished beginning with his attendance at the Tar Heels' February Junior Day.
Although he regularly communicates with a few of UNC coaches, Tomlin speaks the most with Walt Bell, his lead recruiter.
"We talk about everything really," Tomlin said. "Coach Bell talks about playing time and then the other day he told me to tell my mother ‘Happy Mother's Day.' So it ranges from football to everything."
Earlier in the week, Bell made an evaluation visit to Marietta High School.
Despite having a favorite Tomlin says he's nowhere close to making a verbal commitment. His plan is to wait until after his senior football season concludes before taking such an important step.
Between now and that point, Tomlin plans to take unofficial visits this summer and official visits this fall. Over the summer, he is looking to visit Mississippi and NC State for the first time and make return trips to UNC and Tennessee. He doesn't have definite plans for any visits.
"I was trying to make it to [UNC's Fedora] Freak Show, but I don't think I'm going to be able to make it," Tomlin said. "But I'm definitely going to visit there this summer."
Tomlin said that trailing UNC in his top five are Tennessee, Clemson, Ole Miss, and N.C. State.
"Those schools are showing me the most interest and I have a relationship with their coaches," Tomlin said.
Besides UNC and Tennessee, Tomlin visited Kentucky and Wake Forest this spring.
