USC Defensive Tackle Transfers to North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Carl Smalls, a 6-2, 270-pound defensive tackle, who spent the 2000 season at the University of South Carolina, has enrolled at the University of North Carolina and will begin practicing with the Tar Heels this weekend, head coach John Bunting announced today.

"We're excited that Carl will be joining our program," said Bunting. "Carl was an outstanding player in high school who was always interested in North Carolina. We think his decision to join our program will work out best for all parties. Of course, he will have to sit out this season, but by next fall we think he can play a significant role on our defensive line."

A native of Charleston, S.C., Smalls was a first-team 3A all-state performer at St. Andrews High School. He had 70 tackles and nine sacks as a senior and played in the North-South All-Star game. Last year at South Carolina, Smalls sat out the 2000 season as a redshirt.
