Fedora Drops In On Roseboro

Late in the second quarter of Lincolnton's 27-10 victory over Mount Holly (N.C.) East Gaston on Friday night, a helicopter landed near Lincolnton Memorial Stadium carrying UNC head coach Larry Fedora, who arrived to catch the final half of Darian Roseboro's performance.

"It was pretty cool that he came by to watch me for two quarters," Roseboro said. "I saw [the helicopter] when it landed and I heard it when it was coming in. It was pretty cool. I was pretty excited to see him do that."

Roseboro, a 2015 defensive lineman, was tipped off about Fedora's grand entrance during a phone conversation with Keith Gilmore, UNC's defensive line coach, earlier in the week.

"I had called [Gilmore] and he told me ‘I have some good news. Coach Fedora is going to fly in to see you on a helicopter and come watch you play,'" Roseboro said. "I was like ‘I cannot believe he's flying down here.' I was impressed by it. I was excited about it – the head coach and the defensive line coach came by to watch me play."

Fedora's efforts left a positive impression on Roseboro, who holds several offers throughout the region.

"I'd definitely put [UNC] up there," Roseboro said. "I definitely think highly of them – especially after Coach Fedora took time out of his day to come and watch me play. I really appreciated that. If I had a top [schools list], they'd be in my top."

However, Roseboro does not yet have a top schools list.

"Right now, it's all still pretty much all even," Roseboro said. "I'm still open."

At the end of his junior season, Roseboro hopes to have a favorite schools list assembled. He then hopes to make a verbal commitment before his senior season kicks off.

"I'm graduating early so that I can play early," Roseboro said.

"I'm looking for a family environment, good coaching staff that I can build a relationship with, a place where I can fit in and not only be successful on the field but off the field in academics. I want a school that has one of the best degrees you can get. And I want a place that's on the rise."

Gilmore arrived at Lincolnton High – by automobile – Friday afternoon and remained on campus throughout Friday night's game. Although aware of Fedora's means of transportation ahead of time, Roseboro was still surprised and excited when the helicopter landed.

"That's just saying that they're really interested," Roseboro said. "For the head coach to come by, that's a pretty big thing. I was really impressed by him flying down just to see my play."

NCAA rules prohibited Fedora or Gilmore from speaking to Roseboro during their stay. However, Roseboro says that he and Gilmore have established a routine of speaking by phone every Thursday night.

"I keep in contact with him way more than I used to," Roseboro said.

Roseboro plans to return the favor and visit UNC for the football game against Boston College in October.

"I'm going to drive – no flying for me," Roseboro said with a laugh.

Thus far this season, Roseboro has attended games at Clemson (vs. Georgia), Duke (vs. Georgia Tech), and NC State (vs. Richmond).

Outside of his trip to UNC, Roseboro plans to visit Ohio State on Sept. 28 for the Buckeyes' game against Wisconsin. He's working out the details for possible game visits to Michigan, South Carolina, and Tennessee, as well as return trips to Clemson, NC State, and a second UNC game.
