"It started a week after we won the state championship game," Buckingham said about UNC's interest. "Then it carried on into AAU. Then Coach Robinson came to three of my games in Florida."
North Carolina invited Buckingham to campus for an unofficial visit on Friday to see the campus, the facilities and attend UNC's exhibition game that night.
"It was great," Buckingham said of the trip. "I liked the whole facilities. I liked how organized it is. I feel great about them showing interest in me."
What stood out the most about the trip?
"Just taking a tour around the campus," he responded. "It's just beautiful."
Buckingham said Roy Williams has not attended one of his games to date, but that should change in the near future.
"He hasn't seen me play yet," he said. "But when I went on my visit he said he was going to make sure he gets down to Richmond to see me play."
"I didn't get a chance to sit down and have a full conversation with Coach Williams," he added. "I was talking to Coach Robinson. He was telling me that their recruiting process is slow. He wants to make sure that it's the right fit for me and I'm the right fit for them."
Buckingham, who already has scholarship offers from Radford, Virginia Tech, Richmond, Old Dominion, Virginia and VCU, said he could see himself fitting in at UNC.
"I feel like I could fit in that school," Buckingham said about North Carolina. "The way he showed me the campus, I just think it's an environment that I could fit right into."
Buckingham, said the only other visit he's taken has been to Maryland. Xavier and Miami have also shown some interest.
Known as a strong, athletic guard, observers have noted his ability to make his teammates better.
"I can pass," he said. "That's what all these college coaches tell me that I do the best. They said I can pass real well. They said they like that I'm unselfish."
