UNC Among McGirt's Favorites

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Emanuel McGirt's scholarship offer count has reached double digits, but five of those opportunities are sticking out above the rest.

"Tennessee, NC State, South Carolina, Duke, and UNC are my top five," McGirt said. "I don't have a leader, but those are my top five. But I'm still open to other people.

"[Among my top five] I like the quality of the program and the coaching staff. I talk to all those coaches on a weekly basis."

Specifically with UNC, McGirt, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound offensive tackle from Durham (N.C.) Hillside, communicates with Larry Porter, who recruits Durham for UNC. However, he also hears regularly from Chris Kapilovic, the Tar Heels' offensive line coach.

"They're just telling me to keep working hard in the offseason and just keep getting bigger and smaller," McGirt said. "They tell me I can be a great player and thrive in their system."

McGirt attended UNC's March junior day, which was held in conjunction with its basketball game against Duke.

"It was a great experience," McGirt said. "I got to sit down with Coach Kap and I talked to Coach [Larry] Fedora."

The night began with a Hollywood-themed welcoming for each of the junior day visitors, including a Carolina Blue carpet and photos with Rameses.

"That was definitely exciting to know that they were really interested in me," McGirt said.

Growing up in Durham, McGirt grew up a Duke basketball fan. But as a guest of UNC's football team that night, he said he was rooting for the Tar Heels

"That game was a great experience," McGirt said. "Especially after the game – it was close and they won and they got to storm the court – it was an overall good experience."

McGirt also visited UNC when it hosted Duke in football last fall.

"It's a great place," McGirt said. "I definitely like Coach Kap. They definitely think I can fit inside their system and be a great player."

Besides UNC, McGirt has visited Duke, Florida State, and NC State. He's scheduled to travel to South Carolina on March 29 and is working on a trip to Tennessee.

In addition to his favorites, McGirt has collected scholarship offers from East Carolina, Old Dominion, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and West Virginia.

McGirt is aiming for a summer collegiate decision.
