McGirt Commits

Before leaving the country for a vacation on Tuesday, Emanuel McGirt and his family stopped by North Carolina's football offices late in the afternoon and verbally committed to the Tar Heel coaching staff, he informed Inside Carolina.

"I just did it," McGirt said. "I just left Coach Fedora's office and I'm a Tar Heel."

McGirt, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound offensive tackle from Durham (N.C.) Hillside, selected UNC over fellow finalists Georgia, LSU, NC State, and South Carolina. All six schools, plus 15 other schools -- including Florida, Miami, Tennessee and Virginia Tech -- offered him a scholarship.

Throughout much of his recruitment, McGirt has toyed with various combinations of favorite schools lists. UNC and NC State have typically been constants on those lists. That coupled with the two schools' proximity to home had him making several visits to both campuses during his recruitment.

UNC assistant coaches Chris Kapilovic and Larry Porter teamed up to recruit McGirt. Kapilovic, the Tar Heels' offensive line coach, developed a strong relationship with McGirt and his family, while Porter, who recruits Durham for UNC, worked the Hillside coaching staff.

McGirt is the fourth offensive line prospect to verbally commit to UNC – and eleventh pledge overall. He joins an O-line haul that includes Tommy Hatton, William Sweet, and Mason Veal.
