Sutton Pledges to UNC

During a return visit to North Carolina for Fedora's Freak Show, Johnathan Sutton verbally committed to the Tar Heels, sources confirm. He made the commitment while meeting with head coach Larry Fedora shortly after arriving.

Sutton, a 5-foot-11, 214-pound linebacker from Swansea (S.C.), chose UNC over scholarship offers from nearly 20 schools, including Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, NC State, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech.

His scholarship count would have likely increased if he hadn't suffered a season-ending knee injury three games into his junior season.

The knee injury – a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus – is fully healed and he'll be in Swansea's line-up for the 2014 opener.

As a sophomore, Sutton made 75 tackles – including 21 for a loss – and forced six fumbles. He also rushed for 233 yards and five touchdowns on 26 carries.

UNC assistant coach Ron West recruited Sutton for the Tar Heels.

Sutton is UNC's 12th 2015 verbal commitment and the second linebacker prospect to pledge to the Tar Heels. Andre Smith, who committed last October, was the first.
