UNC Watching Williams

Kenny Williams, a 6-foot-3 guard out of Chesterfield (Va.) Bird, used this past week at the LeBron James Skills Academy to gauge his game.

“I like it a lot, there’s a lot of good competition,” Williams said. “You get to see where you stack up with the top players in the country. I think I’m playing pretty well.”

Known as a shooter, Williams has shown at recent camps like the NBPA Top 100 Camp and the LeBron event that he’s capable of doing much more with the ball in his hands and off the dribble.

“It’s not really something I’m trying to show, but it’s something I don’t need to do with Boo Williams because we have so many point guards,” Williams said. “I can do it. It’s not that I’m trying to show, but here I have more opportunity to show it.”

Still, Williams’s best attribute is his ability to shoot and he agreed. His shooting is why he has so many college opportunities. He said he has five schools – VCU, Georgetown, UNC, Michigan and North Carolina -- coming at him the hardest.

Williams said North Carolina’s interest has been steady, as of late.

“It’s been going pretty well,” he said about UNC. “I’ve talked to Coach Williams a couple of times. I mainly talk to Coach [Hubert] Davis. He’s the main one talking to me. But Coach Williams calls me every once and a while. We are building a relationship.”

“They just said they are going to be watching me,” he added. “They tell me good luck and to play well. That’s the main thing.”

According to Williams, the Tar Heels’ head coach brought up a possible scholarship offer, but wants to continue to build the relationship.

“He said he doesn’t like to just throw out offers,” Williams said. “That’s one thing I like. He doesn’t throw out offers without a relationship; I don’t really like that myself.”

Williams was hoping to visit UNC in June, but it didn’t work out.

“Me and my dad were planning to visit before NBA Camp, but it fell through,” he said. “We will probably go down there in August.”

Williams said he still intends on signing during the early period.
