Next Move for Mobile

With the move to a responsive site design, that includes a mobile-friendly display, the current generation of the Inside Carolina App has become obsolete and we are shutting it down. Upon deleting the app from your device, here's how to add the Inside Carolina site to your home screen in its place.

For many years Inside Carolina’s web site was a challenge to use on a cell phone or tablet. Users had to pinch, zoom and flip - and a lot of wrong stories or posts were clicked on despite the best of efforts. Meanwhile, aspects of the site didn’t work at all on those platforms, such as the navigation menus. Independent of Scout, IC created a free app for users. It did the job but not all that well as it was never all of IC. It displayed a fraction of IC’s overall content, it required manual updating for every story, it went down regularly and often it took way too long to get it compatible with all the phones and operating systems out there.

We kept hoping Scout would make the site mobile friendly and that day has finally come. Now the site that users see on their phone or tablet is the entire site and immediately it is as fresh as the site you see on a desktop or laptop. Everything the app offered access to is easy to find on the mobile site. There are no more conflicts and no more downtimes to update for new software. Plus when the forums are refreshed, they'll be mobile friendly too and completely integrated. It's all of Inside Carolina right at your fingertips.

As such, the app is no longer needed and so it will no longer be supported or updated. Instead, you can utilize the mobile site.

Transitions can be tough so we've made a handy guide to help you make an icon on your home screen for the site to replace the app.

IPHONE

(scroll down for info for iPad, Android & Windows phones plus a link to Blackberry instructions)

1. First, head to http://insidecarolina.com on your iPhone, using Safari. (If you are using a non-native third-party browser, you can't access this tool for iOS.)

2. Now hit the Share button: it's the icon in the middle at the bottom of the page for iPhones, top of page. The icon is page with an arrow coming out of it.

3. This takes you to a screen with several options, select Add to Home page.

4. You'll see the Scout on the left hand side, and a text field to the right. This picks out the first few letters of the site's description but you probably want to change it to IC for ease of use. Click Add.

All done. Now when you go to your iPhone homescreen you'll see the bookmark. You can hold it down until it wiggles to move like any icon on the apple home screen. You may want to repeat these steps and do a direct link to the forums or even right to your favorite forum.

If navigating mobile sites is new to you, when you get to InsideCarolina.com you can scroll down through the stories or you can hit the three bars on the top left for the menu to get to forums, football or basketball (which contain rosters, schedules, etc)

ANDROID

Android has a lot more versions and devices so this one may not be exactly like your system but it should be pretty close. We've included a tablet screen as well for one step.

1. Open the browser on your Android smartphone or tablet and go to http://insidecarolina.com.

2. Hit the settings button – it’s three vertical dots, locating in the top right of the screen - and then press Add shortcut to home screen or Add to homescreen.

3. You probably want to change the bookmark name to IC for ease of use. Click Add.

All done.

WINDOWS

Go to InsideCarolina.com. Tap the settings bar at the bottom right hand of the screen. Then select Pin to Start.

Now you can rename the tile to your liking and click "Pin to Start." Your newly created tiled will now appear on your start screen.

BLACKBERRY

Unfortunately we don't have a Blackberry to give you screenshots with but you can do this if your device is running Blackberry 10. We'll link to a site that shows you how, http://crackberry.com/how-add-home-screen-shortcut-any-website-blackberry-10

If you need further help or would like to provide some additional screenshots for Windows or Blackberry phones, email michelle@insidecarolina.com
